We decided to buy some strawberry plants this year and give them a try on our porch. We had about 4 strawberries, but the birds got to them before they were ready to be picked. Last week, though, a strawberry was growing that looked pretty nice. It was going to survive - we hoped! However, poor little Eli walked by it every day and begged to eat it. We tried to explain, "Eli, soon the whole strawberry will be red, and then you can eat it! Until then you can have anything else you want to eat. Just not that strawberry." For three days this went on... Until one day, Eli could not resist, and he grabbed the half red/half white strawberry, stuck it in his mouth (green leaves and all), and chewed it up as fast as he could. "YUMMY!" he cried, trying to hide how sour the fruit actually was.
Sam and I couldn't help but think of poor little Eve in the Garden of Eden. Her immaturity and lack of personal discipline are constant reminders of the sin that is in the world. God had a better plan for Eve, but she rejected it. Sam and I knew that if Eli waited for the strawberry to ripen that he would enjoy it much more and that the flavor would be sweet and delicious. How often do we rush God instead of waiting patiently for the "sweet and delicious" that he has planned for us?
Eli learned his lesson, and he is only 2. Sometimes I don't think I've quite learned my lesson yet, though.
